Brief thoughts on +1

March 30th, 2011 4 comments

In my humble opinion, this is Google’s social strategy in a nutshell. The web at large has been waiting for Google to launch its own Facebook competitor. Google buzz certainly was not it. For now, +1 only exists in search results. We have been hearing that Google had plans of using social data to add weight to its search results. This is how they are going to execute that. In search, you can +1 any result. Once Google allows content producers to embed a +1 button on all content on a site, that is when the game truly changes. Imagine if you will, four (or even 40) sites that are the results of the same search terms. If one of those sites has more +1’s than any other comparable site, you’ll see it at the top of the search results. Simple. Social. Google. Oooh. Did I just craft a tagline?
