Jailbreak 101 Episode 9 – Stwo’s Soapbox

October 6th, 2009 Stwo Comments

It’s been a slow few weeks for us Jailbreakers, especially those of us who own PCs.  If you own a mac, you’re probably thinking I have no idea what I’m talking about, but then again, you probably say that about ALL Windows users.  I took this opportunity to talk about something that really upsets me about the Jailbreak community.  Listen and learn….  remember… always go to the source… give credit where credit is due.

Always check the dev-team blog first.  They are the official developers of the Pwnage Tool, redsn0w, and other tools.

Please follow @iPhone_dev and if you’ve jailbroken your phone, send them a thank you via Twitter.

By the way… please excuse my terrible editing.  I recorded and edited this at 5am.  The part you cannot hear says “There is a black cloud hanging over the Jailbreak community.  This cloud is named quickpwn.com”

Jailbreak 101 Episode 8 – 3G Unrestrictor

September 9th, 2009 Stwo Comments

Ever wonder why you can’t download files larger than 10MB from the appStore or iTunes while on 3G or EDGE? Me too. Does it piss you off that you can only use Skype for the iPhone while on a wi-fi connection? Me too. It makes me wonder why I have a computer in my pocket that cannot use the cellular network I pay for to perform data-intensive activites. Don’t get me started on tethering.

Thanks to 3G Unrestrictor, all of the above mentioned problems (except tethering, grrrr) can easily be solved. 3G Unrestrictor simply fools your device into thinking it is on wi-fi when it isn’t. Try it. You can thank me later.

August 31st, 2009 Stwo Comments

Recently, it has come to the attention of the iPhone dev-team that there are apps that are collecting usage data and location without your knowledge on your iPhone.  Fortunately for those of us with jailbroken devices, we can take measures to protect ourselves.

Managing Twitter Traffic While Mobile

August 22nd, 2009 Stwo Comments

Managing your Twitter traffic can be near impossible, especially if you follow a lot of people. Through trial and error I have gone from being insanely overwhelmed and not being able to keep track of many conversations or streams of my favorite people, to somewhat having a handle on specific tweeters and conversations. This problem is twofold; it occurs when you are on a computer as well as when you are mobile (I consider mobile to be any time you are not in front of a computer). Believe it or not, I have discovered ways to make Twitter more easily manageable while mobile. I’m still having issues when in front of a computer, but have definitely improved things. Read more…

Jailbreak 101 Episode 6 – Backgrounder

August 19th, 2009 Stwo Comments

In this segment, I discuss an app that brings you as close as possible to multitasking on your device.  While backgrounder is in no way perfect, it can and does a decent amount of background processing on your phone. It’s only real limitation is the small amount of RAM on your device.

How (not?) To Maintain A Relationship With A Non-Geek (part 1)

August 7th, 2009 Stwo Comments

I’ve been thinking on this topic for quite a while and now that the blog is up, I have an outlet to express my feelings on this sensitive topic.  When I first met my girlfriend (going forward she will be known as Noodles, to protect her anonymity), about a year ago, we were completely enraptured with one another from the very first moment.  I am so lucky to have met a woman with her sense of humor, intelligence, determination, perseverance, and of course, beauty.   We spent countless days and nights together, sharing our thoughts and feelings on everything imaginable.  I definitely clued her in on my love for technology, and I’m sure she could tell that I had some geek in me from looking at my apartment.  I had the PC hooked up to the HD-TV, the iPhone, the Xbox 360, and a slew of other gadgets.  We even played some games together occasionally.  In fact, I was not even ashamed to tell her I was a World of Warcraft player. (I no longer play, but that’s another story)  She seemed to appreciate my geekiness as a charming part of my character.  Fast forward to 1 year later, and it seems to be causing a bit of a rift between us.  It is no longer charming, but quite the opposite.  I have definitely rubbed off on her with some things, but there are still many other points of contention between us, all related to geekery.
